Rallye du Maroc 2018: A successful edition!

For this 19th edition, the first to be run by David Castera and his ODC Events team, two stars of the discipline\n wrote their names in the history books. At the end of five extremely hardfought stages and six days of racing, the Australian Toby Price (KTM 450 Rally Factory No 8) in the bikes and Nasser Al Attiyah and Matthieu Baumel (Toyota Hilux Gazoo Racing No 306) in the cars both achieved convincing victories. But beyond the exploits of these stars, it was the nearly 140 entries, professionals, amateurs and rookies, who shined in their respective classes. With their proud smiles, today at the finish line, and then at the final podium in Fez, they offered the best reward to the new organisation team.
Back to Fez for this 5th and final stage of the Rallye du Maroc. A route shared by virtually all the competitors, with only the trucks avoiding the narrow section on the second timed special. On the day’s programme: 128 kms of sand, dunes, pistes and a mountain pass, before the ultimate 70 kilometres in the Atlas massif to reach the finish of the rally close to Ifrane.

BIKES/QUADS/SSVs
Toby Price goes hard!

Passing under the arch his arms held high, Toby Price (KTM 450 Rally Factory No 8) exploded with joy. Starting first this morning, the Australian flew over the first half of the last stage, imposing an beatable pace to take, in style, his second Rallye du Maroc victory and his first world title. Winner of the last stage, Ricky Brabec (Honda CRF 450 Rally No 11) saved the honour of the Monster Energy Honda Team, largely dominated over the race by their Austrian competitors. The American ex-motox rider, took the 3rd place overall behind Matthias Walkner (KTM 450 Rally Factory No 3), winner of this year’s Dakar. Finishing 7 minutes behind Price today and 4th place overall, Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna FR450 Rally Factory No 1), suffering from a stomach upset for much of the rally, is one of the big losers of the rally. But the double world champion will no doubt be looking for revenge on the next Dakar… The day after the crash of his team mate Franco Caimi, Adrien Van Beveren (Yamaha 450WR Rally) had decided to not to go flat out over the last stage. Unfortunately, the Frenchman lost control of his bike a few kilometres from the finish and crossed the line winded and at reduced speed, but fortunately unhurt… His 6th place overall, behind the Portuguese rider Paulo Goncalves (Honda CRF 450 Rally No 4) shows that he’s almost back to his best after long months of convalescence. In the quad class it was the Russian Aleksandr Maksimov (Yamaha Raptor No 104) who ends an exceptional season with a victory, here at the Rally du Maroc, by winning the world championship.

Enduro Cup : Coué and Dutrie confirm!
Dominant throughout this Rallye du Maroc, Sebastien Coue (Husqvarna 450 FE No 120) wins a fine victory for his 4th participation in the Enduro Cup, reserved for amateurs on barely modified enduro machines. The Frenchman beats the Indian Abdul Wahid (Sherco Rallye Enduro No 149) who won 3 stages and his team mate at Performance Enduro, Gregory
Strugeon (Husqvarna 450 FE No 125). But the man with the best overall time in the Enduro
Cup wasn’t on 2 wheels but four – Axel Dutrie aboard his Yamaha YFZR quad No 164…
Kariakin, SSV Tsar
Sergei Kariakin is an ambitious competitor. Winner on the 2017 Dakar in the quad class, the Russian hopes to eventually move up to the car. But to get there he first has to shine in SSV. The driver from Ekaterinbourg and his co-driver Anton VLASIUK impressed with their consistence throughout this Rallye du Maroc, proofing the efficiency of their Can Am in the processes. The new Tsar of the SSV class finishes ahead of the Spanish ex-motorcycle racer Gerard Farres and his co-driver Dani Oliveras and the Portuguese pairing of Morais / Megre, also driving a Can Am. The Frenchman Claude Fournier and the famous Portuguese football coach Andre Villas Boas complete the top 5 in which a certain Stephane Peterhansel and his wide Andrea would also almost certainly have featured in if they hadn’t unfortunately fallen victim to a broken shock absorber yesterday.

CARS/TRUCKS
Al Attiyah 5 out of 5 !

Up until now, 2018 hadn’t been a great year for Nasser Al Attiyah and Mattheu Baumel (Toyota Hilux Gazoo Racing No 306). Winners of the Super Special in Fez and the first two stages of this Rallye du Maroc 2018, the Qatari driver and his French co-driver spent the last 3 stages managing their lead without the slightest incident. Better still, the driver equals the record of Jean-Louis Schlesser, while Mathieu Baumel goes one better with a sixth win if you count the one he won in 2011 with the Dutch driver Bernhard Ten Brinke. Once again they have placed themselves as firm favourites for the next Dakar – that they’ve never managed to win together.

Winner of the 3rd stage, Jakub Przygonski and Tom Colsoul (Mini JCW No 300) achieve their best performance on the Rallye du Maroc. But while for the Polish ex-motorcycle racer and his Belgian co-driver this 2nd place is an indicator of their competitiveness, the most important thing was to wrap up their world title at the end of a faultless season. All smiles on the 3rd step of the podium, from Cyril Despres and Jean-Paul Cottret (Buggy Mini JCW No 309), who after having won yesterday the fourth stage are looking forward to a productive future. And if they still no doubt need a bit more practice to work 100% as a team, the five times Dakar winner in the bike class and the most successful co-driver in the history of the race seem ready to make an impact in the Peruvian dunes. As does the ex-rally driver Martin Prokop and his impressive Ford Raptor, 4th overall here and 2nd in the FIA World Cup. They will be joined in the South American continent by another front runner and the current title holder Carlos Sainz (Buggy Mini JCW No 307). Without recurrent gearbox troubles El Matador would almost certainly not have had to wait until today to take his first stage win…
In the T2 class, as anticipated, it was the Saudi driver Ahmed Al Shegawi (Toyota Land Cruiser No 315) who came out on top in his duel with the Nissan of the Qatari driver Abdulla to take the World Cup, at the end of a race animated by the Ford F150 of the Russian Titov.

Michael Benyahia: The Arab star chasing a Formula 1 dream

For over a decade now, Formula 1 and motorsport has been growing its presence across the MENA region but the quest to find the first Arabian superstar has been largely fruitless.
Now though, that could all be about to change with 18-year-old Moroccan driver Michael Benyahia making his name in junior categories that have produced the biggest names in the game.
Competing in Formula 4 in France since 2014, Benyahia made the next step up to the Formula Renault 2.0 series in 2016 and would go on to become champion a year later.
In addition to his racing, Michael has also earned a key role as development driver with the Venturi Formula E team helping to test new parts and technology for a car that is pushing the boundaries of electric vehicles and will take to the streets of Marrakesh and Riyadh next season.
The aim for the future remains clear, however, as Benyahia explained.
“Formula 1 has always been the goal since I started racing in karting and I have worked hard to develop my skills and show what I can achieve in open-wheel formulas,” he said.
“Winning the Formula Renault 2.0 championship last year gave me lot of confidence and I proved I can beat the best young drivers in Europe but I know that the road is still long and it is getting harder and harder.”
Looking ahead, Michael is aiming to move up into the European F3 category in 2019 and to increase those chances he is targeting support from public and private parties in Morocco and the Arab World through sponsorship.
« Success there could well be the launch pad for his motorsport career as he follows in the footsteps of many of the greatest drivers in motorsport history with past champions including Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Esteban Ocon and Jules Bianchi.
“Now I look forward to race in the most challenging single-seater series in Europe well aware that if I can produce the results I know I am capable of this could be the most important year of my life,” Benyahia continued.
Formula 2 would sit as the final hurdle to reaching F1 but the teenager knows how important it would be not just for himself but for the MENA region if he could reach his goal.
“I will be working hard to raise the name of Morocco and the Arab world in motorsport,” Michael said.
“To be the first driver to reach the top would be a great honour and I will not stop pushing in my bid to achieve it.”

SOUTH RACING CAN-AM TEAM MAKES STRONG START IN PERU’S DESAFIO INCA

The seven-strong South Racing Can-Am racing team made a strong start to its challenge for honours in Peru’s Desafio Inca, Peru’s round of the Dakar Series, on Friday.

The team has entered seven South Racing-run Can-Am Maverick X3s in the event and the crews tackled two special stages during the opening leg that wound its way through the Pacific coastal deserts near the towns of Ica and Pisco.

American racer Casey Currie teamed up with French navigator Laurent Lichtleuchter to lead the way for the South Racing Can-Am team at the end of the leg , the experienced off-road driver finishing the day in third place behind Can-Am Peru ‘s stage two winner Juan Carlos Uribe and Chile’s former Dakar bike rider Francesco ‘Chaleco’ Lopez.

The experienced Brazilian driver Reinaldo Varela and his regular co-driver Gustavo Gugelmin were fourth and the Brazilian pairing of Cristian Baumgart and Alberto Neto were classified in fifth. Chile’s Hernan Garces opted to race alone in his Can-Am and held an impressive sixth overall.

Argentina’s Adrian Yacopini and Ricardo Torlaschi ceded some time to their rivals in the fiercely contested SxS category and returned to Ica in seventh position.

Portugal’s Miguel Jordão and Lourial Roldan were classified in ninth, but delays cost Brazil’s Marcos Baumgart and his navigator Kleber Cincea over an hour and a half and they were down in 14th of the 22 survivors after day one.

The rally continues with two further gruelling desert stages in the Peruvian deserts around Ica on Saturday and Sunday.

PAULO GONÇALVES  TRIUMPHS IN ARGENTINA

Monster Energy Honda Team’s Portuguese rider Paulo Gonçalves has clinched the overall victory in the Desafío Ruta 40, the fourth round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. Ricky Brabec finished fifth.

The final stage of the Desafío Ruta 40, from Villa Union to San Juan, which featured two hundred kilometres of special timed stage, concluded to the joy of Paulo Gonçalves and the entire Monster Energy Honda Team. The squad romped to a final triumph in the race after five days of merciless Argentine desert. The Portuguese rider posted second on the final day, after 17:06:02 in the saddle, to claim the top step of the podium in what will go down as one of the toughest ever rallies.

Ricky Brabec finished the Desafío Ruta 40 in fifth overall position, with the American taking the fourth fastest time on the day, some five minutes behind the stage winner.

The next race for Monster Energy Honda Team will be the Desafio Inca in September, held from 13th to 16th, which will take place in the Ica region of Peru.

Paulo Goncalves

I am very happy with the victory here in Argentina. I came with the idea of continuing to improve my pace after a long time without racing and in the end we were able to win the rally. I think yesterday’s stage was the key day. Today was a stretch with some navigation and I tried to use the advantage I had, but I think I managed to stay quite relaxed. I am happy for myself, and also for all my team-mates and for the guys who got injured, Kevin and Mathias Bellino – we hope they can recover quickly. This victory is for them too. We will now try to improve the pace a bit to get the Dakar right. The race in general was tough, but that second day was too much. From the physical point of view it has been a great test for me. The rivals are very strong and that forced us to give our best to win.

Ricky Brabec

The rally is over. The team did a great job. I’m happy to be here in San Juan. The day for me was okay. It was a really fast day with not so much navigation, which made it that much quicker. We were riding for two hours or maybe two-and-a-half hours. We’re looking forward to the next rallies and we are particularly excited about Peru next weeks. We’ll make a push for Dakar. I want to give also a support message to our injured riders in this race: Kevin and Mathias Bellino.

Final Results

1.Paulo Gonçalves (POR, Monster Energy Honda Team) 17:06’02
2.Toby Price (AUS, Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Team) +0’06
3.Pablo Quintanilla (CHI, Husqvarna Factory Rally Team) +8’45
4.Mathias Walkner (AUT, Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Team) +12’47
5.Ricky Brabec (USA, Monster Energy Honda Team) +47’54

TAKLIMAKAN Rally 2018: Stage 3 Results !

Stage 3 of 2018 Taklimakan Rally went wrong for the leaders of the overall classification. Li Yangui/Hongy Pan in car, and Zhaker Yakefu in motorbike, finished far from the winners of the day, the buggy of Ping Sun/Ping Wang and the KTM of Zhang Min.

When competitors arrived at the finish line of this second loop around Shanshan after 327,3 kilometers of selective section, most of them agreed on the fact that navigation, proposed by the recce teams, was very tricky. The cross of Kumtag desert, main challenge of the day, was hard for the competitors who do not feel comfortable with it.

l4iij

The gaps between competitors are getting tighter in car category. Leader this morning, the crew Liu Yangui/Hongyu Pan had to stop on the track sixty kilometers before the finish line for a still unknown reason. Despite its technical problem, the crew number 191 achieved to finish the stage in the 18th position. Zi Yungang / Wang Zengrong of Geely Auto Coopertires team, position sixth today, is now leading the overall classification. Victory went to the blue and white buggy of Sun/Ping Wang, just ahead Christian Lavieille/Jean-Pierre Garcin and Binglong Lu/He Sha, both teamates of BAIC team. The french crew, now 5th of the overall classification, remains in contention for the final victory.

2018 Taklimakan Rally is a wide-open race in motorbike category. A third rider, in three stages, claims the victory today. Zhang Min on his KTM scores double: stage victory and new leader of overall classification. Pablo Pascual and Eric Schiano of Zongshen team continue to be constant in finishing respectively 2nd and 4th of the stage. Armand Monleón and Zhaker Yakefu, leader until then, had to slow down in order to save fuel after making few navigation mistakes. With three quarters of an hour lost today, the Spanish rider will have to push hard until the end to have chance of lifting the trophy for the third time.

Tomorrow, on wednesday June 6th, competitors will take advantage of a rest day in Shanshan to repair their vehicles. 2018 Taklimakan Rally will head East towards Hami for stage 4. Navigation will be as tricky as today.

#Cars:

The prologue of 2018 Taklimakan Rally16,02 kilometers long, did not contain any significant difficulties. This first time section was a perfect way to make a first test for the 90 cars/trucks and 16 motorbikes/ATVs which enter the rally. On very dusty and windy tracks, this prologue was mainly an opportunity for competitors to adapt themselves quickly to their vehicles, and revive their competitive spirit.

The thirteenth edition of Taklimakan Rally will be held from June 2nd to 14th in the Xinjiang province, located in the far West of People’s Republic of China. The high point of the event should be the cross of the tricky Taklamakan desert in the final third of the route.
Gateway for the central Asia and multicultural capital city of the Xinjiang province, Ürümqi will be the host of the opening and closing ceremony of 2018 Taklimakan Rally. The route, designed as a loop, will be the scene of a competition between racing cars, trucks, bikesand ATVs during nine stages and 2769 kilometers of selectives sections. The difficulties of the route, proposed by the recce teams, will rise constantly even if the organization wished to schedule two rest days in order to offer to competitors a maximum of opportunities to reach the final of the rally.

The administratives and technicals scrutineerings will take place at the Ürümqi Yuehe Auto Creative Industrial Park on May 31st and June 1st. The 491 kilometers long of selectives sections of stage 6, the longest of the rally, will be without any doubt a tough challenge to achieve right before the second rest day.

Before reaching Ürümqi, where will bet set up the last bivouac, competitors will fight with Taklamakan desert during the last three stages. Veritable ocean of massives and softs dunes, the slightest mistake might be paid dearly. The cross of this desert will be one of the last significant moment of 2018 Taklimakan Rally before the celebration of the winners on June 14th during the closing ceremony.
